As a frequent traveler, I’ve come to know and love certain products I simply can’t leave home without. A comfortable neck pillow, an effective pair of compression socks or a portable charger for when my phone begins to die. But I never would have guessed one of the items on this list would be an accessory which my high school self would have laughed at: a fanny pack.
Luckily, fanny packs today look nothing like the obnoxious, awkward hip bags clueless tourists wore in the 80s. And thank goodness, because having a fanny pack (also called a hip bag or, originally, a bumbag) while traveling isn’t just for fashion’s sake. This choice accessory has been revamped into something elegant and versatile that allows you to keep valuables safe while keeping your hands available for photos.
“They allow me to be hands-free, which is great when I’m traveling,” Valerie Joy Wilson of Trusted Travel Girl explained. “ When I’m hands-free from my bag and phone, it’s easier for me to engage with locals, take photos and put my focus on the destination I’m in instead of worrying about my bag. ”
Here are 5 stylish fanny packs which are the perfect combination of form and function—and which are perfect for your next trip.
As a freelance travel writer based in Los Angeles, I often write about lesser-known experiences, offbeat or design-focused destinations, and interesting locals doing extraordinary things. I want to tell the unexpected and touching stories of a place. From a hidden natural pool in Aruba to a Nevada museum helping send a satellite into space, I hope to make other people curious about the world. My work has taken me snorkeling between tectonic plates in Iceland, horseback riding through the Brazilian countryside, and riding on an octopus art car at Burning Man with Susan Sarandon. I’ve written for publications like United Air’s Hemispheres, HOW Design Magazine, Kohler Magazine, LaPalme Magazine, INSIDER, and more. Say hi and follow along with my adventures on social media (@itsmetheresac).
