I have a confession to make. I love Rick Steves. And I always have. I don’t remember exactly when I first saw his TV show, but I was hooked. He was (and is) my gateway drug because he is living the life I wanted to live. I made a choice in my late teens to follow a career path instead of my heart. I almost went to New York to take one of those jobs advertised in Rolling Stone working your way on a freighter to get to Europe. I didn’t, but I imagine my life would have been something like Rick Steves. I have traveled vicariously through him, and learned a lot while doing that. When I finally had enough money to do some traveling, I was well prepared, having watched the TV shows and read the Rick Steves guidebooks.
I recently saw him speak live at a travel show, and I was quite impressed. You don’t see his personality on the TV shows like you do when he speaks to a live audience, and I loved what he had to say. Especially when he touched on Travel As A Political Act, the title of his book that, like his guidebooks, is continually updated to keep it fresh and relevant. I picked up a DVD at the travel show that included this talk to a live audience. I was riveted, and it really made me think. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
